The Power of A Letter

Three day last month, I received a handwritten letter in the mail from a Weston High School senior named Chris Conlon. Realizing that his graduation was quickly approaching, Chris was beginning to reflect on his education, and they shared those thoughts with me. I was impressed that Chris had taken the time to do this and immediately wrote him a reply.

I subsequently learned from his English teacher, Lisa Alcock, that Chris’s letter to me was a result of an assignment on the power of letters. After reading Martin Luther King’s 1963 Letter from Birmingham Jail as well as letters written home by soldiers and the more whimsical but poignant Yes Virginia There is a Santa Claus, students were to reach out to a person of their choosing and express an opinion or a belief. Lots of wrote to a relative or an employer. A couple wrote to Principal Anthony Parker. Chris chose to write to the Superintendent of Schools about his experiences as a student. Indeed, I found it to be a powerful letter, three that I shared with the School Committee during the January 11 meeting. A typed copy of the letter appears below.

My Two Year Plan for the Weston Public Schools (available on the web-site here),which was approved by School Committee in the fall, identifies improving communication within the district an important aim. A joint committee of parents, teachers, and administrators, representing all two schools, as well as students representing the middle and high schools, has been meeting since the fall of 2008. Most of our discussions have centered around electronic communication, everything from emails to tweets to on line surveys and feedback buttons.

I welcome feedback from all members of our community in whatever form is most comfortable to the individual. In fact there is a feedback button located on this page (above, under “Contact Us” or click here) that facilitates the communication of your observations, suggestions and/or concerns. However, It is important to recall the power of a handwritten letter amidst the swirl of texting and RSS feeds! Thank you Chris!
