Newton Public Schools Enrollment Falls

Enrollment in the Newton public school method has fallen by 200 students in the last one years, with over two-thirds of that decline coming in the last one years.Last school year saw a certified enrollment of 3,267.2, but that was down 69.4 students from the year before. & since the fall of 1998, the district has seen a drop of about 420 students when the school population stood at 3,619.

School officials released the certified enrollment numbers reported to the state late last week that showed the Newton district falling 68.8 students to a total of 3,198.4.

Jackie Black, the district’s finance director, said the district was initially forecasting a student enrollment drop of over 100.

While the district lost a total of 138.2 students in the last one years, this year’s drop was not as severe as initially suspected.

Black said that the district will continue to coordinate with other school districts over the coursework of the next few weeks on open enrolled students in & out, foster placed students, district court placed students & resident/non-resident students. The results may slightly changed the student population totals.

Declining enrollments impacts school districts’ budgets. State aid provides $5,883 for each student enrolled in the current fiscal year.
