Catholic Schools Office

The Catholic Schools Office (CSO), Newcastle is responsible for the leadership, efficient operation and management of systemic schools which educate approximately 17,000 students in 56 schools in the Diocese of Maitland and Newcastle. The CSO employs over 1000 teachers and around 330 non-teaching staff.

The CSO’s main focus is providing support for schools and helping to ensure that every student receives a quality Catholic education. As a Catholic Schools Office we model ourselves on the person of

Jesus Christ as revealed in the Gospels and through the teachings of the Catholic Church.

The Catholic Schools Office provides to schools a wide range of services and resources. The objective of these services is to provide quality education for the students. Some of the services are:

The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) of the Archdiocese of Pretoria and the Archdiocese of Johannesburg, South Africa, serves the 53 Catholic schools in our two dioceses. These schools educate approximately 32 000 learners and employ over 1 700 teachers and around 820 non-teaching staff.

Instead of a firm handshake, McCaughey, superintendent of Chicago Catholic Schools, greets principals with a big bear hug. Visiting schools across the archdiocese, she bursts into classrooms, praising teachers with high-fives and joking with students about Fat Tuesday. Even in meetings, her colleagues and critics alike are disarmed and charmed by her loud laugh, feisty attitude and courage to speak her mind on how to save Chicago’s struggling Catholic schools.

Only eight months on the job as head of the nation’s largest Catholic school system, McCaughey, 59, is already taking steps to reinvent Chicago’s Catholic schools. She will announce on Monday the establishment of a newly formed archdiocesan school board responsible for implementing a new vision for the schools. In coming months, she expects to reopen two closed Catholic schools as learning evangelization centers, a different school model from preschool to 2nd grade. She also plans to explore charter-school conversions, corporate tax credits, and public and private partnerships to fund cash-strapped schools.

Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Schools Have Faith in Education

PCI was retained by the Archdiocese of Chicago to create marketing communications campaigns to promote its school system, the largest non-public school system in the nation. The first, “Choose Catholic Schools,” became the model for the National Catholic Education Association’s annual Catholic Schools Week. The second, “Catholic Schools Have Faith in Education,” advanced the image, vitality and relevance of the system, positioning the schools as faith-based, academically excellent, technologically sophisticated, and safe and secure.

The “Have Faith in Education” campaign was developed following a series of focus groups that uncovered current attitudes toward Catholic schools held by members of the African-American, Hispanic and general market communities. The program blended participation in a series of audience-specific special events with brochures, billboards in selected high-traffic areas and spot radio advertising.

PCI’s strategy was to leverage the positive story of Catholic schools with an aggressive media relations campaign, which, in less than four years, secured more than 1,500 print and broadcast placements in Chicago metropolitan area media as well as national and regional media. The story of the accomplishments of Catholic schools, their students, teachers, alumni and volunteers were seen or heard by more than 198 million readers/viewers.

Even so, McCaughey sees hope. Her goal is that every Catholic parent who wants a Catholic education for their children should be able to send them to a Catholic school. Her challenge is persuading others to support her vision.

“We have to say as a Catholic community, this is just like Catholic Charities. This is our mission,” she said. “The church needs to look at this and say, ‘These are our children.’ ”

Serving in schools that emphasize a child’s complete development, private school teachers have the privileged opportunity to transmit the core academic skills as well as the lessons that count most in life: lessons about spirituality, love, values, the wonder of creation, the purpose of existence. Can any work be more important?

Indeed, the work of the private school teacher is of such significance, it is often regarded as a ministry and a calling, rather than just a job. Patty Quinn, a teacher at a private school in Maryland, described it this way: “I look at this job as a vocation, not as a career. I really think that the work that I’m doing has eternal consequences.” (Education Week, March 29, 2009)

Private schools are wonderful places in which to teach. They offer caring, orderly, safe, and nurturing environments; they emphasize the education of the whole child; they insist on academic excellence; and they treat teachers as professionals, giving them considerable autonomy and independence in matters of instruction. The disciplined environment, rigorous curriculum, caring communities, and high expectations private schools provide make them some of the most effective schools in the country. Teachers in private schools can spend their time doing what they are supposed to be doing: teaching.

A century ago, many parents counted on schools to help rescue their children from the terrible shadow of poverty. Today, a new generation of children needs deliverance from a far more crushing poverty, a poverty of spirit. In an age which sometimes seems so void of basic values, an age where children are coarsened by the media and numbed by nihilism, parents are calling on private schools to help them infuse their children’s lives with purpose and meaning. They desperately want teachers who can enliven the mind as well as the heart; teachers who can call youngsters to a life of service and love; teachers who can not only teach children to read and write, but also to tell right from wrong.

The life of the private school teacher is an extraordinary calling. Are you up to the challenge?

Holland Christian School Systems Offer Free Preschool

The Holland Christian School incentive program is called “ABC—A Beginning Commitment.” It applies only to the first child from a household. In the ABC program, parents of Holland Christian preschoolers receive a credit equal to half of their child’s preschool tuition when they enroll that child in kindergarten at Holland Christian. The second half of the preschool tuition is credited when the child enrolls in first grade. Three West Michigan Christian school systems are working together to encourage parents of preschoolers to choose Christian education. The word on the playground is that preschool can now be free.

The Kalamazoo Christian, Grand Rapids Christian, and Holland Christian school systems, all with preschool-through-12th-grade programs, are offering families who enroll in the new incentive program and continue through the school system a credit of 50 to 100 percent of the cost of a year of preschool.

“We wanted to assist first families to get over the hurdle,” said Glenn Vos, superintendent at Holland Christian. Vos said that if the school can provide a link with a family for three years, “it is more likely we can retain them.”

The Grand Rapids Christian Schools’ incentive program is called “Preschool to Free School.” The program awards parents a $500 gift certificate when they enroll a GRCS preschooler in kindergarten at any of the GRCS member schools and another $500 certificate when they enroll in first grade. This program applies to all preschool students in a family. Superintendent Tom DeJonge is enthusiastic about the program since, as he says, “It’s tangible. It’s not limiting for anyone.”

The Kalamazoo Christian Schools’ incentive program is the “Kindergarten Voucher Plan.” Superintendent Larry Baker said a voucher for one-half of the cost of a year of preschool was sent to parents of 4-year-olds from one campus. Baker said the voucher is “as good as cash” and is excited to attract parents from their church-hosted preschool to connect with the Kalamazoo Christian system.

Wendy Molotky has enrolled her son Dominik in the ABC program at Holland Christian. Molotky and her husband were wavering between the Catholic school in the area and Holland Christian, and the ABC plan helped them make their decision. “I was thrilled! [Christian education] is expensive, and this is a great way to sign up,” said Molotky.

DeJonge said his staff and principals are excited about the incentive program and stressed that they know what is of utmost concern for families: “Affordability—we know Christian school is a sacrifice.”

Private School Rankings - Things to Consider Before You Enroll Your Child

Private school rankings are very fluid until several weeks into the season. We all know you’ve got that freshman who blossomed in the off-season and those folks that beat you 85-6 are in a down year. Like I say, let’s just go ahead and play the schedule anyway and see what happens. There are some schools listed in tapps d2 that are in tcal or independent; I’ve already contacted granger on them (as well as one school that isn’t playing). Several of those schools have moved to “crowded field football,” and some aren’t playing this year. I’ve also asked granger to add lubbock home school christian this year. As far as i know, they are the only new home school group (added to austin, san antonio and bryan) this year. I had heard about a group forming in montgomery county, but no word on if they were able to field a team or get a schedule.

Private school ranking or rating is a controversial issue that keeps cropping up year after year. Parents are often looking for an easy list that will tell them “the right school” for their child, however, every expert on education says that such short cuts are a big mistake.

Do Not Focus on Rankings

You can find publications that rank Toronto private schools, but do not focus too strongly on these rankings. Remember, regardless of the school you choose, research has shown that the fact that you choose to put your child in a private school is, in and of itself, enough to help him have better test scores upon graduation. Consider these rankings, but do not make your decision based entirely on which school has the best test scores. Remember, your child is a unique individual, and the environment that works best for the majority of students may not work best for your child.

Consider Your Child’s Learning Strengths and Weaknesses

Does your child learn well through visuals, or is he one that needs to touch and feel objects to learn about them? If you have your child in preschool, ask his teachers about his apparent learning style. If not, you have probably already learned the best ways to teach your child. Choose a school that will work with your child’s learning strengths. A visual learner will not do well in a school that learns almost entirely through written projects, but an auditory learner will not do as well in a project-based learning environment.

Consider the Philosophy You Want

Whether or not you choose a religious education for your child, each Toronto prep school has its own philosophy about education and values. As you visit schools and look at curriculums, make sure the educational philosophy and values are in line with your goals as a family. You are not going to change the values of a school just because your children are enrolled there, so choose a school that is a good fit.

Visit the Campus

On paper a school may seem perfect, but you may visit only to find that it has outdated technology or an unfriendly staff. Before you choose a school to enroll your children in, schedule a visit. If you can, take your children with you and participate in at least part of a normal school day. This will give you a feel for the way the staff members interact with each other and with the students. It will also help you see what type of educational activities are performed, and your child will be able to see the environment and give you any input as to her impressions of the school and the kids.

Consider the Extra-Curriculars

Large preparatory schools tend to have all of the extra-curricular activities that a public school might have, and sometimes even more, but smaller private schools may have a limited number of choices. If band is important to you, make sure the school you are considering has this option. For some families a foreign language component is important, but the number of languages you can choose from may be limited if you enroll your children in a small Toronto independent school. If you want your children involved in sports, find a school with a nice variety. However, if sports are not important to your family, make sure the school does not have a compulsory sports program.
